We’re located in Northwest Montana in the middle of
the beautiful Flathead Valley just a few miles from the north end
of Flathead Lake. Flathead Lake is the largest natural lake west
of the Mississippi. It is 15 miles wide, 32 miles long, and as
deep as 350 feet in places. Flathead Lake is full of many types of
fish. Some of them would include: Lake Trout, Bull Trout,
Cutthroat trout, Perch, Pike, and Lake Superior Whitefish. The
lake is supplied with fresh clean water from two main sources, The
Swan and Flathead Rivers. It’s a great area, and the town that
we’re based out of is Kalispell, Montana. We also have Glacier
National Park just a couple of miles up the road.
Flathead Lake is one
of the best lake trout fisheries in the country, with 15-20 pound
lake trout being a fairly common occurrence. If you’ve never
fished on Flathead Lake, there are many guides in the area that
can take you out for a wonderful day of trout fishing. If you’ve
never fished Flathead Lake, a guide wouldn’t be a bad idea,
because with the lakes extreme depths finding schools of fish can
become a bit tricky. Flathead Lake is also home to an enormous
population of Lake Superior Whitefish. In many parts of the
country these 3-5 pound beauties are considered a delicacy, and
Flathead Lake has plenty of them. In fact in the fall you can even
go river fishing for them. Fall is spawning time and they “run” up
the Flathead River to spawn. There are so many of them that they
get stacked up in almost any hole. Using the proper technique, you
can catch a ton of Rocky Mountain Whitefish for your dinner table.
Ultra light fishing for whitefish is a lot of fun. If you’re ever
interested in the “proper techniques”, just contact us for more
information.
The Swan and Flathead Rivers
which supply Flathead Lake are great places to catch brook,
cutthroat, and rainbow trout. For us, the Swan River has become
“The JRW River”. We love it, probably because it reminds us of the
rivers that we used to fish growing up in Pennsylvania. Except for
the fact that in Montana you have gorgeous views all around you,
very few people, and the possibility of a bear attack is never out
if the question. But we have caught many very nice trout ultra
light fishing on the Swan River. And these trout are much bigger
and more beautiful than any we used to catch in Pennsylvania. I
know for me personally, when I caught my first 20” rainbow trout,
while ultra light fishing on the Swan River, without any other
people around, I was hooked! The fish are supposed to be the ones
getting hooked, but that day it was me.
And then there's
Glacier National Park. The scenery within the park is as
beautiful as you'll find anywhere on earth and we have access to
it within miles of us! Oh, by the way, the trout fishing
within Glacier National Park isn't too bad either. It's
pretty good as a matter of fact. If you want to pack up your
fishing rods and find out more information on what Glacier
National park is and has to offer simply
